Education – Bill Bryson Library, Durham University

Project Client: Malone & Surgo

Project Duration: 7 Months

Project Value: £125,000

Bill Bryson Library forms part of the central hub of the science site at Durham Campus. The library was open 7 days a week; and as some of the works involved challenging works included the shutdown of system, we needed to liaise closely with Durham University Estates. These works included full shut down of the library electric distribution to facilitate the addition of devices in section boards to take the additional load to the café service area. We also needed to partially shutdown the fire alarm systems due to a reposition of the fire alarm panel, and part of our work was outside the construction build area to make alterations to the fire alarm loop wiring. These works were fully planned, documented, implemented, and commissioned without any issues arising.

The main works consisted of the full refurbishment of the electrical installation to Level 1 and Level 2 of the West Wing of the Library. The areas covered are an open learning space, a quiet learning study area, a café/study area with full café service facilities, and toilet and wash facilities to both floors. These works consisted of general and emergency lighting, general small power, fire alarm system, data network infrastructure, access control, and mechanical wiring.
